GIANT Collaborative Art Project Continues...

Our art project is "blooming" right before our very eyes.  It is so fun to see all ages, boys and girls, men and women, engaged in creating art together...out of recycled materials!  All of the individual creations that people are making will come together in an art installation that will be unveiled at Easter.  Although unsure of the exact final product, we are all trusting in the process, and contributing our part to the greater whole.

Get involved!  This is a community project.  We need as many hands as possible!

We'll be getting together again on Sunday, March 18th at around 11:30am.  There is a 10am service at The Block.  You are welcome to join us for that too.  We will get together to create right afterwards.  Everyone is welcome!

What: Community art project!...you just need to be able to operate a pair of scissors.
Who: Everyone welcome!  All ages.
When: Sunday, March 18th at 11:30am
Where: The Block - part of Lakeside Church Campus
755 Oak Avenue Parkway
Folsom, CA 95630
Why?: Because it's fun!

Be A Part of Something Big...

Artichoke by Lisa Magruder
February 2012 Open Studio is a Big Deal!

Why?

First of all, because it's our first anniversary.  (Woohoo!)

Second of all, because we are working on a big project!  I'll give you some hints - it incorporates recycling, creating, and collaboration.  It is something that needs a lot of hands and will continue over the next few months...the final product will be unveiled at Easter!  Come be a part of something big, and beautiful, and meet awesome people in the meantime.  All skill levels and ages welcome.  (Adult supervision for small children, please.)

Come to Open Studio this weekend for more details, and bring as many plastic bottles as you can find!

As always, you are welcome to work on your own creative projects at Open Studio whatever they may be, but you are also welcome to join us in what will prove to be an awesome collaborative project.

Open Studio Group Project Update

Hello Open Studio Creative Folk,

Those of you who have been around for awhile know that we've been talking about doing a group show with all collaborative art.   Our target timing for the show will be January 2012.  That means we've got to get moving.

Those who want to participate will need to come up with a theme/concept, and some parameters for that theme/concept.

Example: Last month, Julie provided various sized blocks to everyone who was interested in participating in her collaborative project.  We are supposed to "art up" the blocks any way we so choose, get them back to Julie and then she is in charge of putting together the final product.

Please send me an email with your theme/concept and parameters ASAP: katie@justwonderingthrough.com.  I will compile them, and get them out to the group.  I will also have a list at the next Open Studio.  Please bring any materials that people will need to use for your project.

Don't want to participate in the group show?  No problem.  Come to Open Studio anyway!

Saturday, September 24
12 - 3pm at The Block

Group Show - Projects!

Our Newest Goal: Have a group show in October of this year.
All pieces will be displayed in The Block, and will be collaborative pieces.  Everyone is welcome to participate!

What do I mean by collaborative? Essentially everyone who wants to participate will be a project manager (responsible for concept and compilation of pieces) and contributor (responsible for creating based on each concept).

Project managers dream up a concept (broad or specific - what are you drawn to?), and explain the concept to contributors.
Contributors create individual pieces based on the concept.
The project manager is then responsible for compiling the individual pieces into a final piece that represents their original concept.

EXAMPLE:
I choose a concept - "trees"
I explain my concept to others
Everyone interprets and creates based on my concept of trees (I didn't provide any additional information or material specifications, so it is really broad.  I could end up with photographs, drawings, an interpretive tree dance, a branch off of a tree, a poem about a tree, who knows?  You can be more specific with your concept if you'd like.)
I compile a collaborative piece with everyone's "tree" artwork
It's a beautiful blend of working together, communicating, letting go, etc...

Respond in the comments section with your concepts so we can start thinking about them.

P.S. This is totally optional.  You can come to Open Studio and do whatever you want, hence the "Open"...however, we thought this could be a fun challenge.  Either way, looking forward to seeing you Third Saturday.

July Open Studio - Saturday, July 30 at noon: Collaborative Art Begins!

Hello, hello!
I hope all is well with everyone.  We normally meet for Open Studio every third Saturday of the month, but July is an exception.  I apologize for the last minute notice.  It will be on July 30th this month. (more details below)  Hope to see you all there!

P.S. In June we talked about having a group showing of our art starting in October.  We discussed creating collaborative works for the show.  This could integrate any art form  think big!  Essentially, each person would come up with a concept (broad or specific), and then ask others to create separate pieces based on that concept.  The pieces would then be collected and a final piece would be compiled by the person who came up with the concept originally.  It will be a fun creative process that will take some time...

Ex:
I choose a concept - "photographs of water"
I explain my concept to others
Everyone takes a picture of water as they interpret the concept
Everyone brings their pictures back to me
I compile a collaborative piece with everyone's artwork

It's a beautiful blend of working together, communicating, letting go, etc...

What is Open Studio?
It’s a FREE event for people looking for a place to create art and create community.
Artist of all kinds are encouraged to join us for this FREE, studio-style workshop, where the main objective is to create art that expresses who you are and challenges you as an artist.

Where is it?
The Block
745 Oak Avenue Parkway
Folsom, CA
(Part of the Lakeside church campus)

Who is Open Studio for?
Open Studio is for any artist looking to create art and get to know other artists. We encourage all painters, sculptors, sketch artists, photographers, welders, woodworkers, musicians, dancers, actors, writers, film makers, poets, and other artists of all kinds to join us!

Why should I come to an event like this?
Simply put, artists work better in community. To have another creative person to bounce ideas off of, share feedback with, and just have a good time with while you create is a very valuable tool for any artist. The goal of Open Studio is not only to create art, but also to create community among local artists. At Open Studio, we aim to encourage not only your creative side, but also your social side.

What do I bring?
Whatever creative medium you want to work in that day.  It doesn’t cost anything, but you will have to bring your own supplies.  Sometimes we bring things we want to share with others just to see if it inspires someone else.

Yay, come join us!

Sincerely,
Katie Murphy
