May 31-June 1, 2013

 Who?
Writing people - who already incorporate the act of writing as a means of capturing  thoughts and experiences.
Non-Writing people - who are curious about finding buried stories and want to experiment with this enriching process.
Curious people - who value words, stories, time alone, and connecting for the purpose of finding deeper meaning.

What?

Mining With a Feather retreats derive from understanding language as a gift unique to human beings and a powerful way to connect to others.  The stories we carry, often unawares, set the trajectory of what our future is meant to accomplish.  The retreats offer participants tools and instruction to excavate unspoken words and unexplored stories.  Gathering fragmented memories and impressions propels participants toward healing and joy.
The writing is not about grammar, punctuation, criticism or self-improvement.
The theme of this retreat is  Beginnings.  We will explore this theme through a Word Harvest.  During the two days of guided writing, we will attend to  words that bubble up and nurture them into sentences and stories.   Participants will examine, question and explore fledgling thoughts and ideas in the context of stories.

Why?
We live in a culture where everyone’s talking.  Mining With a Feather retreats are for listening, reflecting and discovering.  Writers’ natural voices are encouraged and supported.  Participants are nudged further along the path their souls yearn to go.
Writing creates a watershed, a release, an avenue through which our deepest humanity can flow.  When we write from those deep places we give voice to the human condition.
When?
May 31 – June 1, 2013
6:30-9:00 Guided Writing (Dinner Included)

Open Studio This Saturday, January 19th from 12-3pm! Come Join Us!

Hi Creative Friends,

"Creativity takes courage." - Henri Matisse

Doesn't it though?  At last Open Studio, dear Janet had painted this lovely floral scene but wasn't pleased with it, so she went over it with white paint to start fresh.  She called it her "Bravery Painting" because she was willing to let go of it, and start anew. I was so proud of her!  In my opinion, this gives a painting depth.  There's more to the painting than meets the eye.  There's a story behind it of trials and tribulations that have gone before.  There are layers instead of one flat picture.  Isn't this true of life too?  Have you ever thought of your life as a painting that is constantly being added to, sometimes messy, sometimes beautiful, sometimes in need of a white wash, full of layers, always in progress, all being handled by a master artist?

Come Be Courageous and Play At Open Studio This Saturday!
You are all invited.  Bring your friends too.  We have some fun tasks at hand, and we would love for you to come play with us!. Bring plastic water bottles this weekend to donate for art - we need them for an up-coming event!
Saturday, January 19th
12-3pm
The Block (Lakeside Church campus)
755 Oak Avenue Parkway
Folsom, CA

Open Studio is safe and encouraging creative time and space for all people of all ages.
Bring (water bottles this weekend!) and your art supplies, whatever they may be...guitar, dancing shoes, paint brushes, canvas, notebook, camera, ingredients for cooking, etc.  We have art supplies and snacks to share too if you'd like to try something new, and we will be working on some projects for the SMUD Youth Energy Summit....

Open Studio and SMUD unite!!
Open Studio is honored to participate in SMUD's Annual Youth Energy Summit (high school students) on January 25th and 26th!   https://www.smud.org/en/residential/education-safety/teachers-and-students/classroom-resources/youth-energy-summit.htm

We will be donating water bottle flower centerpieces that we create for their Friday night dinner, and will be hosting a booth on Saturday morning and afternoon, providing demos to students about how to create recycled art.  Here are some ways YOU can get involved:

1. Donate plastic bottles on Saturday, Jan 19th at Open Studio anytime between 12 and 3pm
2. Come to Open Studio on Saturday, Jan 19th and help us create the centerpieces this weekend (bring any recycled materials that could act as the "vases" - soup cans, kleenex boxes, all ideas welcome...get creative!
3. Let me know if you would like to represent Open Studio with the art demo on Saturday, January 26th from 10am - 1pm at the Youth Energy Summit, no experience necessary...it will be simple and fun!  Would love to have you join us!

Redemption Garden is Donated To Local Women's Shelter
We were so fortunate to have Chris Steiner from St. John's Shelter Program for Women and Children join us at last Open Studio.  She gave us information on the shelter, and thanked us for donating our Redemption Garden art installation to their expanded facility opening up later this year.  Their program is called "Bloom" which goes perfectly with aesthetic of Redemption Garden (more information, look at our archives atwww.openstudioart.blogspot.com).  It truly feels as though this connection was divinely orchestrated, and it is such a blessing knowing that the art is now serving a new and beautiful purpose!

Unique Opportunity To Share Your Art
Fremont Presbyterian Church will be hosting a 2-day art show in early February (details in the attached flyer).  This is a really unique opportunity to show your work to the community.  I plan to participate!  If you have ever even considered showing your work, I would encourage you to consider this venue.  My dear friend, and fellow Open Studio-er, Julie always says, creating artwork is only part of the process, the other part is sharing it.  It requires courage!  I know you have it in you! It is a simple application process, just get pictures of your work sent by January 21st!

May you find the time and courage to be creative this week.  It could be as simple as positioning a conversation differently, handling a problem or a conflict in a new creative way, or it could be expressing yourself through a poem, leaving a kind note on a stranger's car, singing with your friends...whatever it is, try it, see how it goes.  Hope to see you at Open Studio this weekend!

Creatively yours,
Katie

Open Studio Field Trip! - Swing and Country Dance Fundraiser - Wednesday, April 4th

Open Studio-er, Natalie Staley, has an awesome teenage son, Matthew, who is putting on a swing and country dance fundraiser benefitting C2BU, AIM, and WIND.  These are organizations committed to fighting human trafficking in the U.S. and abroad. All proceeds go directly to the organizations.
Everyone is welcome!  You do not need to know how to do the dances in advance, though if you get a chance it might be fun to look up UTube  “Swing Dance”,  “Cha Cha”, “Electric Slide” and “Cowboy Cha Cha” videos to boost your confidence J.  This is a family-friendly event, with people and information available from each organization, but there will be no formal presentation.

Open Studio Field Trip!  Let's go!

Next Saturday, we will be getting together for a work/play day to start putting everything together.  Come join us!  If you want to work on your own projects, that's fine too.  It's creative time and space.

Be A Part of Something Big...

Artichoke by Lisa Magruder
February 2012 Open Studio is a Big Deal!

Why?

First of all, because it's our first anniversary.  (Woohoo!)

Second of all, because we are working on a big project!  I'll give you some hints - it incorporates recycling, creating, and collaboration.  It is something that needs a lot of hands and will continue over the next few months...the final product will be unveiled at Easter!  Come be a part of something big, and beautiful, and meet awesome people in the meantime.  All skill levels and ages welcome.  (Adult supervision for small children, please.)

Come to Open Studio this weekend for more details, and bring as many plastic bottles as you can find!

As always, you are welcome to work on your own creative projects at Open Studio whatever they may be, but you are also welcome to join us in what will prove to be an awesome collaborative project.

Open Studio Group Project Update

Hello Open Studio Creative Folk,

Those of you who have been around for awhile know that we've been talking about doing a group show with all collaborative art.   Our target timing for the show will be January 2012.  That means we've got to get moving.

Those who want to participate will need to come up with a theme/concept, and some parameters for that theme/concept.

Example: Last month, Julie provided various sized blocks to everyone who was interested in participating in her collaborative project.  We are supposed to "art up" the blocks any way we so choose, get them back to Julie and then she is in charge of putting together the final product.

Please send me an email with your theme/concept and parameters ASAP: katie@justwonderingthrough.com.  I will compile them, and get them out to the group.  I will also have a list at the next Open Studio.  Please bring any materials that people will need to use for your project.

Don't want to participate in the group show?  No problem.  Come to Open Studio anyway!

Saturday, September 24
12 - 3pm at The Block
755 Oak Avenue Parkway
Folsom, CA 95630

September Open Studio: Saturday, September 24: 12-3pm

"Many people do not consider themselves creative, often because they can’t draw or sing. However, every human being has been given the most essential tool for creativity, and that’s the human imagination. There isn’t a person alive on this planet without imagination. You may not be very imaginative, or you may limit your travels through your imagination, but you have one."
 - Erwin McManus

Engage your imagination this month with Open Studio.

Open Studio is just as it sounds; an open space to create in the presence of others, without judgment, without the pressure of having to produce anything in particular.  We do challenge each other with different projects, and are just starting to work on collaborative art pieces for an upcoming show.  Come join us.

Saturday, September 24, 2011
